DURKA SUCCESS IN PARIS TOUCH TOURNAMENT PLATE WINNERS 2007.
This was the first time that Durka's had gone on Tour abroad and we couldn't have wished for a more successfull weekend. We started off with 50% of the team feeling slightly under the weather due to the dreaded french Stella atoir, Somehow we felt the need to compete with Irish in a drinking and singing competition that went late into the night. However, we were Lucky enough to have some more professional players who maintained a straight head for the next day, Oh Jersey would be so Proad!!
We started off by trying to keep to our game plan of doing the basics well, concentrating on driving, defending and subbing well, this improved game by game and made sure that we finished top of our group, This was most satifying after playing such a hard gameagainst Jersey who played some awesome Touch, however we just pipped them by one vital try, we expected to be playing a 2nd placed side but we were somehow placed against the mighty Otters of London who were a team of ex Pats from down under, They were also top of there group and they played some awesome touch, we were extreemly unlucky Rae almost got through for a try but unfortunately my pass wasn't as accurate as it should have been, Cobbi had a try disallowed, They called a touch but I'm sure it was a Phantom, and I believe Phill put Jason through with a superb pass but it was called forward. However we can't take it away from them, they beat us 3-0 and played some good touch, they eventually won by beating the Kiwi Dragons 5-1 in the Final.
After Playing this game we thought that would be it, but we we're put into the Plate competition and we met Team Europe 91, A very decievable team, very pacey and a huge amount of Subs. We thought it would have been a breeze, we started by playing well, we were dominating the majority of play and went ahead 1-0, I then sent a long pass across the park hoping that Jason would catch it but unfortunately it got intercepted.
The game eventually tied 1-1 and went into a drop off situation, We almost scored imediately but unfortunately yet again a wild pass to spuggy from myself failed us, we were then down to four players and Cobbi broke through on the wing as dummy half and passed to myself to score, we were then off to the final,
We were then placed against the same Jersey which we played in the first round of matches, A most enjoyable match, all the guys and gals from Jersey showed great spirit and gave a good game, we initially went ahead by two trys and they pulled this back to 2-2, we then went ahead again and they tied again, Luckily we improved our Mirror defence from the first game and kept out a few trys, eventually our dummy half skills showed as we become eventual winners by 4-3, for me this was the most enjoyable game the attitude and ability of our opponents were very similar to our own, Cheers Jersey for being such worthy oponents.
